React Native, built by Meta, has been the default cross-platform choice for a decade. It renders using each platform's native UI components, so your app tends to feel instantly familiar to users on both operating systems.

Flutter, built by Google, takes a different approach: it draws its own UI pixel-by-pixel instead of using the phone's native components. That gives you a custom, brand-consistent look that's identical on iOS and Android — useful if your app's visual identity is a differentiator, less useful if you just want it to feel like "a normal app."

Where it can still lag is in very niche, region-specific, or brand-new third-party SDKs, where you might need custom "native bridge" code to plug the gap.

For maintenance, both frameworks release regular updates and both occasionally require dependency upgrades that touch your app. Flutter's tighter, Google-controlled release cycle tends to mean fewer surprise breaking changes; React Native's larger but more fragmented ecosystem means more choice, but also more variance in package quality and long-term support.
